Practical Driving Test

Your examiner will introduce themselves to you and ask you to sign a document stating that the car is insured and that you live in the UK. They will ask if you wish to take your instructor on test. This is your choice. Your driving instructor will go through the advantages and disadvantages of this with you.

Eyesight Test

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check. You must be able to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres. If you can't, you will fail the test. It’s worth getting an eyesight test before your first lesson.

Following this you will be asked one question from the Show Me, Tell Me question bank. Your instructor will help you learn these questions, both for the test and for your future driving.

The driving part of your test will last about 35 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit a serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

You will be asked to perform one of the following:

  • Reverse bay park.

  • Forward bay park.

  • Reverse parallel park.

  • Pulling over on the right and reversing.

  • you may also have to do an emergency stop.

Independent Driving

For about 20 minutes, you’ll be asked to follow a pre-set route on a Sat-Nav. You’ll be expected to make your own safe decisions whilst following the instructions given by the device. It doesn’t matter if you go wrong, so long as you go wrong safely. Either the Sat-Nav will redirect you or the examiner will step in and give directions.

Occasionally, the independent driving will be following signposts rather than a Sat-Nav.

Show Me Question

During your drive, the examiner will ask you to operate one of the controls. For example, “when it’s safe to do so, show me how you set the front demister controls”. You will be expected to keep full control whilst operating the control.

The cost of taking the practical test is £62.

You will also be required to pay for your driving instructors time. Normally two hours.
